Elevator safety standards sound like paperwork until you understand what each requirement actually prevents. Here is a plain explanation of the codes we build to and why they matter for anyone who owns or manages a building.
The two main standards
EN 81-20 and EN 81-50 are the European safety standards for the construction and installation of lifts. EN 81-20 covers the lift itself, including the car, doors, machine and safety gear. EN 81-50 covers the testing and calculation rules used to verify components. Together they set requirements for door strength, cabin lighting, emergency communication and protection for anyone working in the shaft.
ASME A17.1 is the North American safety code for elevators and escalators. It covers similar ground through a different framework, with detailed requirements for braking, overspeed protection and inspection intervals.
Alongside these, local regulatory codes apply, and a properly installed lift in Pakistan should satisfy both an international standard and local requirements.
What the safety systems actually do
Overspeed governor. If the car descends faster than its rated speed, the governor triggers the safety gear, which grips the guide rails and brings the car to a controlled stop. This is the system that makes a free falling lift effectively impossible in a properly maintained installation.
Automatic rescue device. During a power failure, this moves the car to the nearest landing and opens the doors, so passengers are not trapped. In a country with frequent load shedding this is not optional, it is essential.
Emergency communication and lighting. If someone is stuck, they must be able to call for help and not sit in darkness.
Overload protection. The lift refuses to move when loaded beyond its rating, which protects both the passengers and the machine.
Testing before handover
Certification is not a sticker. Factory acceptance testing verifies components before they leave the manufacturer. Site acceptance testing verifies the complete installation in your building under real conditions. Routine third party inspection then confirms the lift stays compliant over its life.
