Choosing between a passenger elevator and a cargo elevator is not simply a question of size. The two are engineered for different jobs, and picking the wrong one leads either to a lift that wears out early or to money spent on capacity you never use.
Passenger elevators
These are built around comfort. Smooth acceleration, quiet operation, a finished cabin and fast door cycles all matter because people notice them every single day. Typical capacity runs from 450 kg to 2,500 kg, with speeds up to 3 m/s in taller buildings.
Choose a passenger elevator for apartment towers, offices, hotels, hospitals and retail. The priority is moving people quickly during peak periods, so traffic calculation matters more than raw load rating. A building with 40 flats and one undersized lift will frustrate residents every morning no matter how well the lift is built.
Cargo elevators
These are built around durability. Reinforced cabin walls, heavy duty doors, tougher flooring and a machine sized for constant loading and unloading. Capacity commonly starts around 3,000 kg and runs to 10,000 kg and beyond.
Choose a cargo elevator for warehouses, factories, hospital service wings, hotel back of house areas and any setting where trolleys, pallets or equipment move between floors. Finish is secondary. What matters is that the lift survives daily impact from loaded trolleys without denting or drifting out of level.
The mistake we see most often
Owners sometimes use a passenger lift for goods to avoid a second installation. It works for a while, then the cabin walls dent, the door tracks take a beating from trolleys, and the lift starts levelling inaccurately. Repairs and downtime follow, and the finished cabin that cost extra is the first thing ruined.
If a building genuinely needs both functions and space is tight, the better answer is a single lift specified for goods handling from the start, with a cabin finish chosen for durability rather than appearance.
